Encaustics: Painting with wax

$140.00 per person – no concessions

About your host

Deb Gartland AAPS is a self-taught traditional and contemporary Fine Art photographer & mixed media artist who incorporates photography into Encaustic Painting – painting with a beeswax and dammar resin mix. She is passionate about light, movement and colour and sees the world around her as a photographically artistic wonderland. Deb’s Photo Encaustic/Mixed Media/Encaustic Painting developments are taking her photography to a sophisticated and ever more contemporary artistic level. Deb is owner/manager of the Gellibrand River Gallery. An allocated part of the Gallery is a studio/workshop dedicated to her artistic practice.

What we’ll do

The workshop starts at 10:00 and finishes at 16:00 with 30 minutes for onsite lunch. Each workshop is for a maximum of four people. Guests must 18 years old, due to the nature of the process as we use hotplates, hot air guns and burners.

We start the day as follows:

  • Introduction to the tools, resources and history of encaustic wax;
  • Working in a safe environment (heat, ventilation);
  • Preparing your panel for painting (we work on mdf and birch ply panels);
  • Layering and fusing the wax;
  • Mark making, creating texture and embedding images;
  • Embedding small objects in wax to embed on the surface;
  • Using stencils;
  • Finishing your panel ready for hanging;
  • Caring for Encaustic paintings, and;
  • Guests leave with their panel.

Depending on your goals, I will assist in technical aspects of the process, including colour theory and paint mixing, and work with you on image and composition. If you just want to experiment, that’s just fine too. Encaustic is wax so it hardens at room temperature. This means your work will be ready to travel when you are. No wet paint messes.

The fun of Encaustic is that you can get marvelous special effects just by melting the colourful wax paint. It can be as simple or as detailed as you choose!!!

What else you should know

No experience in art, craft or Encaustics is required for this workshop. Everything will be covered and you will be walked through creating your own piece of unique art.

What I’ll provide

Tea, coffee, full cream milk and sugar will be provided. Lunch will not be provided, but can be brought with you or purchased at the Gellibrand River Café next door.

All equipment, tools, substrates and mixed media components will be provided for the encaustic painting workshop.

What to bring

Guests will need to bring their lunch, or money to purchase lunch from the Gellibrand River Cafe, next door to the Gallery.
